Summer Volunteering Programs 2017 – Second Round Application

At the moment the English teaching program still has a few places left. We are therefore accepting late applications until 27 March 2017 (Monday)Late applications will be processed in the order received.

Current vacancies in the English Teaching program:

Batch A
Location: Mae Sot, Thailand
Partner organisation: BHSOH Learning CenterKnowledge Zone
Date: (including training in Mae Sot)
Option 1: 1 – 31 July 2017(1 month);
Option 2: 1 June – 31 July 2017 (2 months)
Number of vacancies: 1-2
Responsibilities: Prepare and deliver English lessons to students (Grade 7-10, in BHSOH) and working people (in Knowledge Zone) whose English abilities range from elementary to pre-intermediate levels.

Batch C
Location: Mawlamyine, Myanmar
Partner organisation: Mon Intensive English Program (MIEP)
Date:
Option 1: 30 June – 28 July 2017 (1 month);
Option 2: 26 July – 26 August 2017 (1 month);
Option 3: 30 June – 26 August 2017 (2 months)
Number of vacancies: 2-3
Responsibilities: Prepare and deliver English lessons to students with elementary English level, focusing on speaking and writing skills.

Application

Who we are looking for

We are looking for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and also graduates who are

  • Interested in the development of Myanmar;
  • Adaptive and sensitive to the local context and a new environment;
  • Independent, responsible and committed; and
  • Patient with teaching students who may not have a good command of English.

Students from all majors welcome. Prior experience or a relevant major (e.g. education, social science, etc.) is a bonus, but not a prerequisite. Any specific skills or knowledge required are stated below.

Training for volunteers

The training workshop in Hong Kong will be held on 25 March, 2017 (Sat) from 9am to 1pm (all programs); 2pm to 6pm (English teaching) in HKU. Anyone applying before 25 March are strongly encouraged to attend the workshop.

Volunteers may also receive intensive training on teaching methods, classroom management and local culture in Mae Sot before teaching begins. Training arrangement will be announced after the placements are confirmed.

Fundraising

Our volunteers have always been engaged in fundraising for the partner NGOs, migrant schools and local trainers that support the programs. This year, volunteers are requested to raise HKD 1,000 per person.

The donation will go to

  • Science and  Technology Training Centre, Mae Sot (renovation project costs);
  • BHSOH, Mae Sot (to fund a school bus for students living far away from school); and
  • Mon Intensive English Program, Mawlamyine (to install a WiFi network in the school).

No administration fee will be charged.

We encourage volunteers to explore different ways to raise funds, whether individually or as a group, with a view to raising awareness about the issues related to Myanmar. We are happy to provide advice upon request.

Transport and Accommodation

We will provide travel advice at a pre-departure briefing session. Volunteers will generally make their own arrangement for transportation and accommodation, either in group or individually.

Expenses and Subsidies

All volunteers are required to pay HKD 1,000 as a deposit upon acceptance of the placement.  The deposit shall be refundable upon satisfactory completion of the program, including all training sessions and the pre-departure briefing, and the submission of a short reflective essay.

Our volunteers are self-funded. Those joining the programs that last longer than one month may apply for subsidies or reimbursement to partially cover the transport, accommodation and teaching materials. The amount of subsidy will be subject to the availability of external funds Connecting Myanmar receives.

Estimated Cost

Programs in Mae Sot

  • Transport: HKD 2,500
  • Accommodation: HKD 1,500 (monthly)
  • Food: HKD 1,200 (monthly)

Programs in Mawlamyine

  • Transport: HKD 3,500
  • Accommodation: HKD 800 (weekly)
  • Food: HKD 350 (weekly)
  • Visa: HKD 320 (4 weeks)/ 390 (10 weeks)
